MATTHEW WELBOURN - PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICER, UCAS
Matthew joined UCAS at the beginning of 2005 having spentseveral years in the Royal Navy as an Intelligence Analyst. As a Professional Development Officer, Matthew has extensive experience of providing training and consultancy on key issues that impact on progression into higher education, both to admissions and recruitment staff working in higher education institutions and to teachers and careers counsellors advising applicants through the admissions process.

MICHAEL SENIOR – ASSISTANT HEADTEACHER AND AUTHOR
Michael currently manages a Sixth Form of over 450 students. His centre was recently assessed to be in the top
five percent of Sixth Forms, according to value added data, and now over one third of his students achieve AAA grades at Advanced Level. A former Chief Examiner in his subject area, Michael is better known for having produced a range of highly successful publications for post-16 students including Writing an effective Personal Statement (4th ed) as well as a newly published series supporting managers and subject leaders working to improve the quality of learning at KS5.

JUDITH JAKES – PROJECT DEVELOPER, HARINGEY CITY LEARNING CENTRE
Judith has been a teacher for over 30 years and was a former ICT coordinator and Head of Sixth. Her current role from 2001 is to extend and develop the innovative use of ICT across all the key stages in order to raise attainment and to coordinate a new Masters Level course, the ‘Transformation Teachers Programme’. Judith has particular expertise in digital media, virtual learning environments and Web 2 presences.

SUSAN KAMBALU – TEACHER OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES, ST THOMAS MORE, HARINGEY
As a member of Haringey’s ‘Transformation Teachers Programme’, Susan is well placed to deliver a session on
using new technology even more innovatively than most to broaden the repertoire of learning strategies in and out of the classroom including the use of ‘social networking’ and ‘blogging’.

MIKE HARRISON – SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PARTNER, ACCREDITED OFSTED INSPECTOR
Mike has been an NPQH tutor and assessor since the course began, following his former career as a Secondary English teacher. Now, an Accredited OFSTED Inspector and consultant to Local Authorities and schools, Mike has supported many educational institutions by helping staff become more secure lesson observers. Having kept sight of the complexities and challenges within the classroom, Mike adopts the style of a critical friend: sympathetic, open and challenging. He has worked with a range of schools from those facing challenging circumstances and in special measures to highly competitive institutions keen to develop a rigorous yet supportive approach to improving teaching and learning.

PATRICK MCNEILL – EDUCATION TRAINING AND PUBLISHING CONSULTANT
As a freelance consultant and former teacher and Commissioning Editor, Pat works across the full range of 14-
19 curriculum and qualifications, including GCSE, AS/A level, vocational qualifications, key skills, Skills for Life, functional skills and apprenticeships. Pat has worked on many projects for QCA, the DfES Standards Unit, LSN, DCELLS (Wales), and all the unitary awarding bodies, as well as for companies in the private sector, including Coca Cola Enterprises Ltd andmTesco, and with many educational publishers.

DR WENDY PIATT - DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE RUSSELL GROUP OF UNIVERSITIES
Dr Wendy Piatt was previously deputy director and head of public service reform at the Prime Minister*s Strategy Unit where she has also led work on social mobility, education and skills and digital inclusion. She has published articles in national newspapers and journals including The Guardian and New Statesman and written reports including Opportunity for Whom? The funding & structure of post-16 education (2001) * which was widely considered to have influenced government policy on the funding of further and higher education. She has also made numerous appearances on the broadcast media including the BBC News at Six and at Ten, News 24, Newsnight, Channel 4 News, On the Record and The World at One. She was asked to work on the White Paper, The Future of Higher Education (2003) and was seconded to the Department for Education and Skills. As the current Director General of The Russell Group of Universities, Dr Wendy Piatt is well placed to inform Heads of Sixth about key issues relating to undergraduate admissions to the most competitive research-intensive universities.
