FROM INDEPENDENT LEARNING TO ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING

Posted on November 9th, 2007 in November 2007 by Michael Senior

This session will provide a range of practical strategies and photocopiable resources to raise standards of teaching and learning at KS5. All the strategies provided are designed for
Heads of Sixth to spread throughout their sixth form, not just for use within their own classroom The session will address:
• strategies to encourage independent learning at KS5
• constructive activities for students across all KS5 subjects during the Summer period after AS Level examinations
• ways of supporting subject leaders to address the Assessment for Learning agenda.

I should practice what I preach and write a comment! I found this session particularly useful, particularly the self assessment sheets that can be given out with essay assigments that include a brief outline of the success criteria, and the sections where the learner and teacher each mark down if the student is meeting the criteria or not.

Thanks for a great conference – I found it really informative and look forward to sharing what I learnt with my colleagues!

Here we are ages later and I’m busy looking at the topic again, well aware that I’ve made very little progress!! However I have managed to introduce the idea of Learning Conversations to 60% of our departments with some interesting results. I shall be working round all the departments in the next few weeks getting them interested in the Assessment for Learning concept. Lookig at it again now I can see how powerful a tool for improvement it can be. Many thanks for an excellent conference.
