UCAS AND THE ‘STRETCH AND CHALLENGE’ AGENDA

This session will address the issue of higher education selection of the most able applicants by the most competitive universities.
The session:
• offers the response from UCAS regarding the way AS./ A2 Levels might change to differentiate the most able – including the role of possible quartile banding;
• examines changes to the UCAS process to incorporate unit grade information
• outlines the role and extent Advanced Extension Awards are used to make offers;
• explores the role of admissions tests in selecting applicants.

UCAS AND THE 14-19 AGENDA FOR CURRICULUM CHANGE

This session will outline developments at UCAS regarding the 14-19 agenda for curriculum change and the increasing provision of vocational options at Advanced Level as well as the position of the International Baccalaureate. The session will:
• explore how UCAS proposes to process applications from those with Specialist Diplomas
• outline the current national picture of Advanced Level uptake of BTEC, OCR Nationals and Applied courses
• provide details about the up-take of Foundation degrees and HNDs.
• describe up-take trends of the International Baccalaureate Diploma

FROM INDEPENDENT LEARNING TO ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING

This session will provide a range of practical strategies and photocopiable resources to raise standards of teaching and learning at KS5. All the strategies provided are designed for
Heads of Sixth to spread throughout their sixth form, not just for use within their own classroom The session will address:
• strategies to encourage independent learning at KS5
• constructive activities for students across all KS5 subjects during the Summer period after AS Level examinations
• ways of supporting subject leaders to address the Assessment for Learning agenda.

POST-16 VOCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FROM 2008:

This session will consider the progress of the 14-19 curriculum proposals and their impact on the range of vocational options at post-16 from 2008. The session will:
• outline the current status of Specialist Diplomas on provision from 2008;
• explore how imaginative ways of expanding vocational opportunities can provide greater breadth of choice and increase revenue stream to your sixth form.
